Do I need council approval to build with TuffBlock deck blocks?

As building guidelines change from shire to shire, we always recommend checking your local guidelines before commencing construction — and getting the thumbs up before starting your project. Unfortunately, there is no single “golden rule” answer. That said, many councils have exemptions for structures under a certain size (e.g., 108 sq ft), not attached to the house, and under a certain height. Your structure may not require approvals.

How high can I build using TuffBlocks as the foundation?

TuffBlocks have been engineered for structures up to 36" above ground. Having said this, many people have built structures higher than this using the composite foundation method (TuffBlocks in combination with concrete-in-ground footings). We recommend that you consult with a qualified builder or engineer regarding your project.

Can I use TuffBlocks in high wind areas (Cyclones, Hurricanes, Storms etc)?

Yes, you can use TuffBlocks in high wind areas (cyclones, hurricanes, storms, etc.), but we recommend checking with your local building authority first. Some TuffBlock users choose to use an intermediary solution in high wind areas, meaning they use TuffBlocks in combination with concrete-in-ground footings, or use earth anchors to tie their project down.

What if I have ground movement in my area – clay/sandy soils?

TuffBlock uses a floating foundation system designed to let your structure move slightly with natural ground movement. This helps prevent the stress and cracking you often see in fixed, concrete-in-ground foundations.

Is TuffBlock suitable for Frost Heave conditions?

Yes. The Floating Foundation System was developed for northern (USA) regions where freeze–thaw ground movement is a major issue for traditional “dig a hole and pour concrete” structures. The system was originally created for regions with extreme freeze–thaw cycles where the ground becomes too hard to dig and traditional fixed footings fail because they can’t flex with seasonal expansion and contraction. By “floating” instead of being locked into the ground, TuffBlock helps keep your deck or structure safer, more stable, and longer-lasting.

Can I use TuffBlocks on sloping ground?

Yes — simply level the ground under each TuffBlock, then level the structure above using extension posts supported by the pocket of the TuffBlock below. Refer to the installation guide for more detail. Alternatively, if the surface is sloping at a severe angle, it may be worth considering an alternative support/footing/foundation.

Probably added more blocks than needed but plan on putting something heavy on top. Once you have the tuffblocks level it works out perfectly. I had no problem receiving the product, which I appreciate greatly. I have not started the project yet because of weather, but will share pictures as I move along. I did want to take this opportunity to ask you a question. The reason that I chose this product was because I have sprinkler lines in the ground where the new deck will be placed. In speaking with a trex expert, he cautioned me Against placing the tuff blocks on top of the irrigation lines. We do plan to put a hot tub on the deck, and he had said that the tuff block supports would eventually crush those lines. Do you have any suggestions with regard to how to prevent this from happening if I have to put a tuff block over those lines? I was considering placing a flat steel plate over them and under the tough block to distribute the weight, but i'm not sure if that's the right way to go? I would appreciate any suggestions that you could share. Thank you, Ken Mount
